Shades of Avonlea

Thursday, July 16, 2015

Willows whiten, aspens shiver.
The sunbeam showers break and quiver
In the stream that runneth ever
By the island in the river
       Flowing down to Camelot.
There she weaves by night and day
A magic web with colors gay.
She has heard a whisper say,
A curse is on her if she stay
      To look down on Camelot.

     - The Lady of Shallot -

"Would you please call me Cordelia?" No..... not really "My name is Anne, with an 'e'." :) I couldn't resist. Those are classic lines.
As an avid Anne of Green Gables fan I have always been inspired by Anne's short recitings of Tennyson's Lady of Shallot. Therefore naturally when I found a book of Tennyson's poems at Goodwill (along with...ehem....17 other books I snagged...I might be a little obsessed) but needless to say I was over the moon :) There is something about the melodious words of poetry that flow over the pages like the words of an old song, taking one into a different world. And of course if we are on the topic of reciting Tennyson I can't help but recall the all to well known scene when Gilbert recues Anne after Diana's skiff sunk and was holding onto the piling for dear life (we all know Gilbert rescued her even if Anne denies it).
Ever since taking these pictures Sunday I had been dying to write this post. Not that it si anything special but everything about this post simply exudes all the Shades of Avonlea. If Anne were to live in the 21st century I am sure that she would choose to wear a dress such as this...elaborate pattered stripes, scalloped front panel, light blue buttons, Boat hats, brown heels, and of course a book of Tennyson! Just the typical Anne of Green Gables modern rendition. I made this dress earlier in the summer and I must say I am loving it even more after these pictures. I wanted a 1940's styled sun dress so with a few alterations to a pattern I had lying around, this is what was created.
Dress: Made//Belt: Thrifted//Hat: Forever21//Shoes: Goodwill (American Eagle)
Of course, my backyard was not the ideal picture spot. I was planning on going to the train tracks or to a lovely "Avonlea Like" lane, but alas the backyard had to do. Even if the backyard wasn't my first choice it didn't turn out to bad....after all Anne and Marilla had a wonderful garden at Green Gables.
Okay, so as much as I LOVE to read and am obsessed with books (I seriously bought 19 just last week) I have never been one to read much of the classics. Probably due to the fact that I don't have as much time to read many books but I honestly would love to become more versed in the classics. Tennyson's poems for one are absolutely inspiring and profound but there are so many other great classics. I actually picked up a beautiful 1927 version of Ivanhoe at the same time I picked up Tennyson...truly lovely copy. Maybe one day I will make a dent in the classics and broaden my horizons :)
Even if these heels are held together with gorilla glue and nails they are still a new favorite pair of shoes!

"Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it."
Until next week dear lovely readers!

Have you ever read any Tennyson?

Are you an Anne fan?

Have you read many classics?

P.S. Don't forget to catch this weeks post over on STANDOTgirlTM Here!

  1. I love this outfit!! It looks exactly like something Anne would wear. And I think your garden was the perfect "Green Gables" backdrop. :) Those shoes are so adorable.

    1. Of course I knew that:) Yes...why not buy 19 books!!! Um, let's see: the entirely hunger games series, Boundaries in Dating, WEIRD, Death Comes to Pemberly were my top finds and then there were a host of other books that I don't remember the names for but that look simply splendid:):):)
      Hugs!

  5. I LOVE this outfit Madison, and yes, I think I'm one of the biggest Anne fans there is! :D I've done a bit of reading of Tennyson and the classics, but that happens pretty naturally in college- I've taken a course in mythology and also some standard English courses! For fun, I read a mixture of classics and modern books, and I must say I've been preferring the modern stuff lately!

    1. How splendidly wonderful! Yes, I myself have read a number of great works of Litterature in my college English classes but most ranged from short stories, a few poems, plays, and all the Epics in my Brittish Literature course. I would have to agree with you that I too am a fan of both classics and modern books!

  6. I agree, this is very Anne :)
I think I'm a little scared by classics. They're sometimes hard for me to get into, and then they can be so long. Really, I think I just have to push myself, as I've enjoyed the few I have read (Jane Austen!!!)
I love your outfit! (And your nails! May I ask what color they are?)

    1. Thank you Mary! I completely understand what you mean. I think I would run into that same wall reading classics. And my nails...oh this is such a favorite color of mine! It is actually a nail polish from the dollar store (cheepL.A. Colors) but it doesn't have a name, so I think I shall name it "Anne's Garden." :)
      Hugs:)

And... I LOVE Anne!!! She is one of my biggest inspirations, and lately I even try to give my blog posts titles chapter names from her books (my blog name is actually a chapter name too- a golden picnic)...
And oh, the Tennyson quotes! Soooo romantic ;)

  10. What a sweet, deeply lovely post. I grew up, like countless youngsters before and after me, on the works of Lucy Maud Montgomery, and all the more being a Canadian, and beamed the biggest smile when I saw the title of your post.

Elegantly pretty summer outfit - you really do look like you should be walking on the shores of the Atlantic on a breezy summer afternoon in PEI.

    Big hugs,

  11. The hat is what makes it totally Anne-with-an-e! And Marilla would have approved of taking pictures in the garden instead of traipsing around to suit your imagination ;-)

    1. Oh my gosh, your comment was perfect! You are right....the hat is the defining accessory (I need to wear it more often) and Marilla would have totally said something like that:)

  12. I love the scallops on your dress Madison! Combined with the stripes, it makes for a lovely effect. My favorite poet would have to be Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, only because he wrote Psalm of Life which is the only poem I ever memorized. :D

  13. I adore all of L.M. Montgomery's works, but Anne will always hold a special place in my heart, because she was the first of a wonderful world of characters! I really like your outfit, it feels very summery and sweet. And your garden really does 'Green Gables' justice ~ it's so lush. ❤
