Surviving & Thriving When The World Turns Upside Down

Tuesday, May 19, 2020

Dress: Me Made & Designed  |  Shoes: Thrifted (Old Navy)  |  Hat: Bought in Williamsburg

Dear Lovely reader, as I sat down to write this post, I felt myself hit a wall....I didn't know what to write about. It's so easy to go out and take pictures, but when it comes to writing a post, I often find myself torn.....do I write about fashion & style and explain my outfit or do I write about life? Writing about fashion and style is easy, but I sometimes feel inauthentic by avoiding the important topics.

Like everyone in the world right now, you probably find yourself in a similar situation as me, stuck at home and all of your plans for the year flying out the window. Now, let me be clear on one thing, I am not complaining about the inordinate hours of time stuck at home, because home is one of my favorite places to be (where are all my Introverts at?). However, I thrive on predictability, plans, and a schedule, but with so much uncertainty in the world & social distancing in effect, life is a bit of a struggle right now, finding the balance between surviving and thriving.

With extra time at home, I have found myself spending a LOT of time in my thoughts, reflecting on life, becoming more in tune with myself, and thinking about every little things that happens (this is both a good thing and a bad thing!). However, in the midst of sitting down to write today's post, I decided to go for authenticity and remind you that you are not the only one who feels stuck, uninspired, stressed, depressed, anxious, and uncertain during this time.

We all find ourselves in a season of life that none of us have ever experienced before, much less a time in our world where we are all facing a situation that many of us have never dealt with. The struggle between surviving and thriving is REAL!!! Surviving might look like simply getting through your day, avoiding a panic attack, completing your to do list, actually getting dressed for the day, brushing your hair for the first time in 3 days, or maybe even just keeping a schedule. I think for so many of us right now, if you were to ask us how we are doing we might say "I'm hanging in there" or "I am just trying to survive"! In fact, I know I have giving that response to others and have heard it from many people more than once. In the midst of uncertainty we often resort to a state of survival and simply making it through this season SANE! However, in spite of our survival nature and mindset, I think we often loose so many opportunities to thrive in the midst of unplanned and uncertain season.

My life really is in a state of "survival" right now, trying to figure out this new normal (you would think after 7 weeks I would have figured it out), but in the midst of it, I often loose sight of the opportunities I have to THRIVE! Any time we face unplanned situations, we are given an opportunity to GROW, and this season is no different! Maybe you are surviving (like me), but are you thriving? Are you making the most of this season to grow as a person and use this precious time to pursue things that will pour into your life?

At the beginning of this year, if you asked me if there was one thing I could change about my life, I would have probably said "I wish I had more time" and lo and behold, who knew that this year would turn upside down so drastically and that the one thing I always often wished for would be granted. Now, I don't know what situation or season you find yourself in, maybe for you, everything that is going on in the world actually means you have less time....I know we all find ourselves in different places. However, I do think if anything, we have been given the time to re-prioritize our lives, refocus our energies, create new schedules, or work on things we had often put aside.

In this season, while I have still been putting in time as a teacher (via online learning) I have also found myself with extra time in my schedule to work on projects I had so often put aside due to lack of time. While life might seem like survival many days, I have been trying to develop a mindset of THRIVING! Thriving will most likely look different for all of us, but thriving has the same outcome in all of our lives, thriving means developing a positive outlook in spite of uncertainty and using every opportunity to grow as a person, despite the hard days.

Thriving might mean pursuing your passions you had long abandoned. Thriving might mean learning more about yourself and getting in touch with your emotions and taking time for self care. Thriving might mean you give yourself the freedom to dream the dreams you once thought were impossible? Thriving might simply look like creating a schedule for your life. Maybe thriving is continuing to build relationships with others around you, or getting outside of your comfort zone to do something new?

Thriving looks different for us all, but it is vitally IMPORTANT to develop a mindset that allows us to make the most of every opportunity & approach this uncertain and unprecedented time in our lives and world with a renewed outlook and optimism. When we are thriving, we are automatically surviving, but if our only goal is to survive, are we giving ourselves the space to thrive

This post is as much a pep talk for myself, as it is an encouragement to you, in reminding you that we are all in this together, and we can all thrive together, in the midst of our automatic survival mode.

What has been the hardest part of Social Distancing for you?

Where do you find yourself, are you surviving or thriving?

Life Update: When Life Changes Focus

Saturday, May 2, 2020

Dress: Thrifted  |  Shoes: Ross  |  Hat: Tenth Street Hats (gifted)  |  Bag: Thrifted  |  Earrings: Wallmart (old)

Dear lovely readers, wow....it has been far to long since I wrote those words, and even longer since I properly wrote a post to you all. I sit here, on a Saturday morning typing out a post, just like I used to do. It's a strange feeling coming back to something that used to be such a huge part of your life...like using muscles that have since been dormant. While I have posted a few travel posts here and here, it truly has been FOREVER since I took fingers to keys and got back to my actual blogging roots.

When I started this blogging journey as a young and ambitious 18 year old, I had no clue what the future had in store. I also didn't know how much this space on the internet would mean to me & I also didn't know how much my life would come to change in so many ways. However, here I sit, almost half way through 2020, stuck at home during the Coronavirus, and I find myself missing this creative outlet of my fashion blog!

The thing is, that I haven't completely stopped creating or styling. While I might have dissipated from the blog, and while my fashion posts might have been few and far between, I have still been creating, just on a micro scale by posting on Instagram. Whats really sad is that in the time I have been gone I actually have done photo shoots, but for some reason I could never find the inspiration to write up a post about them.

With that, let me fill you in on all that has been happening in my life since my last official style post back in October of 2018...WOW...that was forever ago! If you have seen my very sparse posts between now and the fall of 2018, you might have noticed that they focused on Travel and teaching....and that honestly kind of sums up my life in a nutshell.

In all honestly, when I started teaching in the fall of 2018, I told myself that I would still be able to blog, and here I am in the midst of 2020 with a meager 11 posts to show for it. It's not that its the worst thing in the world, but I have realized that for this season, life has kind of changed focus. Thus, while this corner of the internet will always be a part of me, I have realized that currently this corner will probably be visited by me less frequently, though I am determined to try and get back to my roots!

However, what's the "real" life update? No, I'm not getting married nor am I in a relationship (as much as my sister and mom would like), but I have realized my focus on life has changed. Maybe it comes with now being a 24 year old (adult) with a teaching job? Since becoming a teacher, my life honestly hasn't been the same (in a good way). To be honest I kind of see it similarly to when someone becomes a mom and suddenly their life is busy and all about their child....being in my now second year of teaching is honestly a lot like that (not that I have experience being a mom or anything). Life honestly most days (and weekend, and nights, and even in my dreams & daily thoughts) is about my "kids" as I like to call all my students. My week days are busy teaching lessons and transition between the 4 preps that I teach, not to mention the work usually doesn't stop when I get home.
Okay...so that is at least what my life and schedule looked like before a WORLD WIDE Pandemic, and I am now currently a teacher adjusting to online learning and not getting to see my kids every day (but we are making it work).

Apart from teaching, I really have been focused on travel, as many of my blog posts in the last 2 years can attest to. Honestly I think a huge incentive to now being a teacher and having a job is that I have the means to travel....not just in saving in order to go on trips, but also in planning educational trips for my students (more on that later). Travel has honestly become a HUGE part of my life, and a part of my life I didn't know was missing. I have visited 7 countries over the past 2 years, and 5 of them were without my whole family (either alone or with a travel friend) (See: Paris, Scotland, England, Oxford).

Oh, and between all of that I moved classrooms after my first year teaching & also changed the preps I taught...which means I now teach Fashion Design (3 levels)...talk about Dream Job!! Oh, and I also dyed my hair RED on my 23rd birthday (in 2019), bought TONS more vintage clothes (seriously, I need my own house), actually started reading more books (almost got to 30 books each year), became obsessed with Sewing again, and started a podcast (more on that soon).

Over the past 2 years, I have come to realize that life is composed of seasons, and each season has a different focus, meaning in different seasons different things are important to you. Teaching is definitely the season I find myself in, but that doesn't mean that I am not still that ambitious and creative 18 year old who loved fashion and used it to express herself. I still have so many of the same dreams I did back in college, and in the midst of life changing focus, I am just trying to figure out how all of those dreams fit into my life.

One thing I can say is this corner of the Internet will always be mine and still hold who I am. I was actually looking through old posts the other day and reminiscing about how much I have changed through my time as a blogger. I grew so much as a person and experienced so many things I never though I would...it honestly made me very proud of who I have become. All this is not to say "farewell" but more so to say "I AM BACK" but maybe a little less frequently (although you can stay up to date on my life on Instagram). I truly have missed this corner of the Internet! Oh, and if you are completely confused and wondering why my blog is now called Invintaged, I will write a post on that soon...don't worry, it's still the same me :)

Polka Dot Stroll

Tuesday, May 29, 2018

Dress: Ross | Shoes: Thrifted | Purse: Ross | Hat: Forever 21 | Scarf: Vintage
*photos taken by my brother*

Nothing like a good polka dot dress and an afternoon strolling by old houses! A couple of weeks ago I took a day trip to the beach with my mom and brother, and you know me, I always plan for the occasion and the opportunity to take pictures:) With that I knew I wanted to stop along some of my favorite streets in Galveston to take pictures in front of the old houses. This happened to be a new street we found and I absolutely LOVE the houses!
Visiting the old historic parts of Galveston is as close as I get to visiting Charleston in Texas:) I have always loved old houses because they hold so much history and so many stories. I think just looking at and strolling by old houses takes me back in time and I start imagining who lived in the house 100 years ago, what they did, what kind of functions they had, what was their story? From landscaped yards, green lawns and quaint picket fences what isn't there to love!
Since I knew I would be going straight from the beach to downtown I tried to put together a simple, yet classic ensemble and this old brown and white polka dot shirtwaist dress was perfect. I wanted something simple, but also classic and southern so what is more classic than polka dots and more southern than a hat and a straw bag? For the record this is probably the quickest change I have made for a photo shoot as I threw this dress on over my swimsuit, put on a sparse amount of makeup (hence why I look slightly pale) and topped off my beach head hair with a hat! Honestly though, with old historic houses like these you can wear the simplest of outfits and still look classic!

Do you like historic houses?
Have you ever seen the historic homes in Galveston?

Up For an Adventure

Tuesday, March 27, 2018

Jeans: Thrifted (Wrangler) | Shirt: DIY (gift from a friend) | Shoes: Converse | Hat: Forever 21

I'm always up for an adventure (as long as you give me at least 1-2 days notice)! Looking back on my life I can't help but remember the many adventures I have been on. My family is definitely big into traveling, camping, and taking road trips to different states which has fueled my love for adventure and visiting new places. While I might not always like stepping outside of my comfortable life and town, I do love the little adventures that come up.
I am always excited to see a new city, spend time in nature, explore shops in a historic town, and look out the window as the countryside flies by in a blur. Adventure fills me with wonder and longing to see more!
Over spring break my family and I took a quick road trip up to visit my brother in Belton Texas, a small quaint and lovely town in Texas. We set up camp at the lake and enjoyed time in the great outdoors, going to my brothers baseball games, finding a hole in the wall coffee shop, eating he best BBQ, and walking around historic downtown Belton....it was the perfect getaway and adventure!
Since going on the trip required a mini road trip I had to pull out this darling shirt that one of my best friends made for our road trip last May. I decided to pair the shirt with my favorite high waisted jeans for comfort, a pair of white sneakers, and a hat to keep the sun off my face. Definitely love how comfortable this look was, but also how perfect it was for an adventure!

Are you a fan of adventures?

A Day At The Met

Monday, January 15, 2018

Sweater: Faded Glory
Skirt: Thrifted
Tights: Amazon (fleece lined leggings)
Boots: Joules (Amazon)
Boot Liners: Amazon
Beret: Amazon
Purse: Vintage Coach

The first major post of my New York trip....hooray!!! New York was seriously AMAZING! Not sure if I will even be able to capture the vibrance and bustle of the great city in all of these coming posts or in my vlog, but it is definitely all I thought it would be and more.
One of our first stops on our trip was The Metropolitan Museum of Art. I have always loved going to art museums, seeing history captured in art, admiring the talent of artists from the past, and seeing the many forms of art that exist. The MET was definitely the most impressive art museum I have yet to visit and is broken into so many different sections and time periods of exhibits you can't help feeling as though you are walking through history. I loved that each time period exhibit was in a room (or rooms) that actually resembled the architecture of the time. On one side you were walking through an elaborate and elegant American house filled with furnishings from the late 1700's. In another section of the museum you visit the Renaissance time period and feel as though you are in a dark paneled wood abbey, it was so cool.....I would highly recommend visiting if you are ever in New York.
As for my ensemble for the day, the weather in New York the first day was quite cold (15 degrees and colder to be exact) so I was definitely focused on dressing for the weather. Looking at my outfit you might be wondering how that was even dressing for the winter, but what you can't see are the two long sleeve shirts + tank top under my sweater, the 3 pairs of fleece leggings, and the two pairs of socks + boot liners. With all of those layers and my parka coat I was perfectly cozy in the nippy city air. I would definitely have to say my style inspiration for New York was classy prepster meets Parisian chic (and as all the NY outfit posts come to the blog you will start to see that trend).
This look in particular I really LOVE now after wearing it in NY. I have recently become obsessed with beret hats again, so this black number is a classic staple. I also love how classic turtle neck sweaters are, so pairing this plain black one with this wool wrap skirt was the epitome of classic prep with a hint of french. As for my footwear, I practically lived in my red Joules rain wellies because New York was covered in a blanket of snow, plus they are comfortable and warm:)

Have you ever been to New York?
Have you visited the Met?
Do you like art museums?
