I Can't Take A Compliment

Tuesday, July 26, 2016

Top: Target c/o ThredUp
Skirt: Forever 21
Belt: Vintage
Shoes: Old Navy
Purse: Coach (Vintage)
Necklace: Sam Moon
Earrings: $1 Wallmart

I can't take a compliment! I know that might sound weird but its totally true. Whenever people compliment what I am wearing, my blog, Instagram, my sewing, baking, etc. I never know how to respond......Usually I just respond with a mumbled "thank you" and then awkwardly stand there trying to change the topic of the conversation and take the spotlight off of me. Or, in regards to social media I revert to the monkey emoji's that cover their eyes and mouth (those emoji's are my fave).

The thing is, I don't do the things I do to gain recognition, be thought as cool/talented, or get people to compliment me or my abilities. I do what I do because I LOVE it, because it is me, and it is a way for me to use my gifts and talents. That is the craziest thing about putting myself out there, is that people begin to see who I am and all the things I can do. Even stranger is that I always forget people I know actually read my blog (hello all of you!) and then when I see them they always say something about it. Don't get me wrong, I do love it when I get compliments from people, but I hate being the center of attention, so reacting to the compliments I receive is always hard.

Blogging and Instagram are like my jobs I don't get paid for and sewing and baking are just two of the gifts God has given me and I love using them to fill creative voids and make other people happy. Therefore, even though it is hard for me to take a compliment at times, it's something that comes along with my varied interests and actually gives me an opportunity to compliment those who give me such sweet compliments.

So here's to each one of you who always make my day by your sweet comments and compliments!
You are FABULOUS:)

Do you ever have a hard time taking a compliment?

  1. I can definitely relate to this! I think I've gotten better about it over the years just because I've always studied something creative in school.

but also your outfit is adorable!! I LOVE that shirt. I've been meaning to try Thredup for a while now.

  2. Man, we girls get complimented so often everywhere, it gets to be tiring at times! :P I LOVE being the center of attention, and words of affirmation are definitely one of my love languages, but still I find it so hard to respond to compliments. The usual "Thank You" gets to be old-hat after a while, you know? Ah, well, we'll figure something out eventually, I'm sure ;)

    1. I am sure you girls do get a lot of compliments! I can see how you like being the center of attention Charlotte:) However, I can also see how all the compliments get tiring after awhile.

  3. I'm the exact same way! I just never know what to say, and I end up reverting to the monkey emojis haha. It's even worse in person. Goodness. I need to get better at this!

  4. Definitely understand these feelings Madison! I'm getting better, but it's a challenge! What I do right now is try to turn their compliment to me into a compliment to them! So for example if a friend says she loves my Instagram feed, I'll say, "Aw, thank you! You're so sweet!" It doesn't seem like much, but I think it does a good job a reverting the attention. I'll also talk about how I really enjoy taking the photos and how I appreciate them taking the time to look at them etc. :)
Also this may be my favorite outfit you've ever posted! I'm kind of dying over your vintage Coach bag. I came so close to ordering one, and I still really want to! They are so timeless and beautiful! :)

    1. I love your tips! I am definitely stealing those. Thanks for your comment about the outfit....it's probably a new favorite of mine too, and this coach purse is definitely a treasure (especially since it was my moms).

  5. I like getting compliments, but I have a hard time knowing how to respond and act graciously. I don't want to be a grouch and shrug their compliments off. I would feel awkward if someone did that to me, but I don't want to act smug like I am only getting what I deserve either. I like getting compliments, but don't think I am ever really comfortable being the complete center of attention. While I like people celebrating my birthday for example, I don't like having everyone staring at me. :)

  6. I'm a little socially awkward, shy, and super introverted, and I can totally relate! I like getting compliments but, like you, I hate being the center of attention. "Thank you" is usually all I come up with, though I've gotten a little better with responding over time. And then there are those weird compliments, like a little while ago somebody told me, "You look like you just got out of school!" and I was like, "Heheh... um... thank you?" Yeah, pretty awkward.
Love the bicycles on your top!

    1. Weird compliments are the hardest to respond to! Sometimes I just laugh and smile at them before saying thank you.

    2. Yes! With weird compliments I always laugh (err, more of a nervous giggle) and smile at them before saying thank you... or while I try to decide whether I should thank them or not!

  7. First off, I LOVE your top. It's so cute!! And you found it from ThredUp? I've been perusing ThredUp off and on for the past month or so and still haven't found anything worth buying yet. :/

And secondly, YES. I love receiving compliments from people, and I love being appreciated, but I am not a "spotlight" kind of person. It's a weird mix of a personality. It can definitely make responding to compliments a little hard sometimes. :) You're not alone!

    1. I will be doing a review for my ThredUP purchases soon. I understand how it can be difficult to find stuff on there. I think you have to know what you are looking for before you peruse.

  8. As vintage wearers who dress completely different than most people, we are bound to be the centre of attention, and yet somehow I never know what to say either. :) I get complimented a lot on my clothing, which I am "sort of" used to now. The problem is I don't want to appear vain or self-centred, so I am always a bit unsure of how to respond! Compliments on my blog always throw me off too, and I react the same as you do. haha.

    1. I absolutely think the reason it's hard to respond to compliments sometimes is, because I don't want to appear vain or self-centered.

  9. The fact that you approached this topic is great, because it is something I've thought about but never put into words. Yes, replying to compliments can become difficult because I always want to make it more of a conversation and less of a comment. But sometimes, the only thing you can do it say "thank you." I love how you always reply so promptly to your comments, though! It feels much more like a conversation. I always reply, but sometimes it takes a bit.

Speaking of compliments, I'm about to shower you with some! I love this simple yet elegant outfit and your lipstick! The pics are so clean and gorgeous as well! Keep going girl! Keep your eyes on Jesus!

  10. Such a relatable post! One of the most important things my parents instilled in me as a small child was to not simply say "thank you", but to reply with "thank you very much" (as doing so can indicate an even deeper degree of appreciation). This little life lesson has always stuck with me and is the first thing I usually say when a stranger compliments me or if someone does anything nice for me, as I truly do appreciate it and find that such, partnered with a warm smile, is often all this uber shy (and introverted) vintage wearing gal needs to navigate her way through a sea of compliments. :)

  11. I can totally relate to what you say. Whenever someone compliments me I don't know how to respond. "Thank you" is the only thing that comes to mind and I often wonder if it was the right thing to say.

Cute top by the way :)
