Rise & Grind in Menswear

Thursday, January 19, 2017

Pants: Thrifted
Sweater: Vintage
Collard Shirt: Thrifted
Socks: Sam Moon
Shoes: Target
Purse: c/o Gamiss
Pin: Charming Charlie's

Looking back on this outfit and even wearing it, I feel like I should be in a 1950's news room, drinking copious amounts of coffee and smoking a cigar as colleagues click away on typewriters and the boisterous voices of reporters drift through the smoke laden air.......

Truthfully I have never really been into "menswear" style nor tried it for myself until recently and I have to say that it is growing on me. When I took a trip to Goodwill before school started back (to get a few more professional pieces) I stumbled upon these navy and red pin striped pants and just had to try them on. Of course after trying them on I was completely sold as they were high waisted, unique, and extremely comfortable.

When it comes to the topic of Menswear I quite like the idea that we have the ability to take a seemingly masculine piece and put a classic and feminine spin on it. While these pants were actually women's slacks (probably from the 80's) they were a looser style and easily not quite as feminine as other slacks or skirts. However, I liked the challenge of adding pieces to create a classic reporter style ensemble. Top off the look with sheer socks for a bit of ladylike flair and this adorable "Rise & Grind" coffee lapel and you are ready to grab your notebook and hit the town searching for the next big story!

Have you ever played with menswear style?
How do you take a more masculine piece and make it more ladylike?

Trip To The Cinema

Skirt: Thrifted
Sweater Set: Thrifted
Shoes: Sperry's
Socks: Forever 21
Scarf: Vintage
Sunglasses: Eyefolds

I made it!!! The fall semester is over and I am heading home for Christmas break today...HURRAY!!! This semester seems to have flown by even though it seems like I have been gone from home forever :) It's CRAZY to think that next semester I will be a senior in college.....a senior! I still can't believe that I only have two more semesters of college left, but just thinking about that seems a bit crazy still.

However, I can't wait to get home for Christmas break and enjoy the festivities of the season and spend much needed time with my family. I am planning on doing lots of baking, helping to throw an ugly Christmas sweater party with one of my best friends, and attending all of our fabulous family Christmases. All in all I just can't wait to be back home around familiar places and faces.

The pictures for today's post were taking a month ago when it was much warmer in Texas and felt like summer rather than fall. Somehow we usually skip right over fall and dive head first into winter. However, after discovering this old theater downtown this semester I had been waiting to take pictures there one day. I love how the old theater gives a perfect retro backdrop and decided to pair a neck scarf with this forest green sweater set, a button front skirt, and loafers. The whole look was perfect for the theater and reminisce of a trip to the cinema in the 1950's! I especially LOVE the John Wayne "Paradise Canyon" movie poster mural, it definitely reminds me of my Grandfather who is a huge fan of classic westerns.

I know that I will definitely be visiting this theater more next semester for photos, but for now it is time to top in my car and head home for Christmas break!! Cut the Christmas music and coffee for the car ride home:)

Are you on winter break yet?
What are some things you have planned for the break?

***Pictures By Me***

As much as I like to be my own unique self and person, uninfluenced by the opinion of others around me, I feel that I have fallen away from being true to myself. I remember the days when I first discovered my love for vintage and embraced that new found love with a burning passion of dressing from centuries gone by. As I look back on pictures from years past I have see how my fashion has evolved and devolved, but also how I seem to have lost a part of myself over the fear of others opinions. That seems strange even to say or admit, but as I look at how my style has changed and slowly downgraded from the period perfect love that I once had for vintage eras, the only conclusion I can bring forth is that somewhere deep inside I still base what I wear on others opinions of me.
It is hard to accept that those fears are what have lead me to fall away from what my style used to be, but I have to accept them as partially true. While style in and of itself is singular to each person and changes along with us as we enter and exit different seasons of our life, I can't help feeling like something is missing when I look in the mirror and try to pick an outfit. I am missing that vibrant passion for vintage style and embracing it for all that it is without worrying about what others say or think! Why have those fears kept me from wearing the things that I used to?
As I look through pictures of other vintage styled souls, I can't help but see my old self in their style. Their style that is so self confident and proud.....not caring what others think because they know they are unique and one of a kind!

Maybe it is that I love fashion itself so much that my style have slowly formed around a look that embraces so many different types of "looks" that my wardrobe is a vast array of past loves, losses, and new discoveries? I dabble in different eras. I try different styles I see people wearing. I mimic current trends that catch my eye, and in the midst of it I am constantly changing. My style is not always stable. Some days I might look like a confident red lipped lady from the 1940's. Some days a swinging skirt donning 50's girl. And other days I might look like a classic version of a modern lady. It is unpredictable (at times), and yet I always find myself going back to my old love. While at times I change out of a period appropriate piece from a past decade due to an unnecessary uncertainty in the back of my mind in regards to others, some days I pull that period appropriate piece out of the rubble and put it back on knowing that it is time for me to find myself again....to embrace who I am and confidently go out and conquer the world.

My old love will always be my first love, and no matter how many times I fall away from it, I will always find myself back where I stood years ago with victory rolls, hair scarves, t strap shoes, pink tights, and clotch hats, walking through the doors of a public university and not caring what people thought of me, because I knew who I was. I was unique. I was one of a kind, and no one could change that. No one could steal that away from me and make me into someone else.

They say that some people hide behind their clothes, but to me, my clothes are what helped me to step out and be seen. Be seen not as the shy and quiet girl who hardly talked to anyone, who only speaks when spoken to, but as the girl who knows who she is and isn't afraid to show it. To be bold and loud without ever opening my mouth. A girl who embraces her uniqueness and hopefully inspires others to do the same.

Really, when you get to the heart of the matter, its all about staying true to yourself. Sure, there might be other lovely things and styles that catch your eye but there is only ONE you. Thus, in order to be fully you....to be confident as you, you have to embrace the style that calls your name. The style that makes you giddy with excitement every time you wear that dress or see pictures of others who share your same style. Your first love will always be what you come back to. So try as you might, even when you loose your way, you will always find a way back.

Do you ever lose sight of who you are?
Does you style change or stay the same?
What is your "first love" style?

If I am being honest there are days where I feel completely uninspired and unmotivated to put together a vintage ensemble. Quite honestly the past couple of months I feel have been void of true vintage fashion and only sprinkled here and there with ensembles that only look somewhat vintage inspired. Maybe it's that I have classes every day and therefore always want to wear something nice and maybe the constant need to create the perfect look has become a chore and left me void of inspiration and looking like I stepped out of a different decade?

Maybe it's also that I became so focused on not standing out so drastically (vintage wise) when it came to my wardrobe, but then again when had that ever stopped me in the past? I was feeling lost when it came to vintage fashion and thankfully this past Saturday I was renewed with my love for what vintage fashion truly means to me! Even if I only wore this ensemble for 30 minutes as I ventured across campus to take pictures (I was planning on running errands in this but my car wouldn't start) it was completely worth it! As odd as it may seem, the simple task of putting pieces together for this look gave me a renewed energy for incorporating vintage back into my wardrobe. It was an ensemble that gave the the courage again to be BOLD and be fully vintage and not worry about what others might think of me, but simply enjoy stepping back in time:) When I think about what vintage fashion means to me.....this look seems to encompass it all and make everything feel right!

Being someone who wears vintage isn't always easy for me at times! I know that seems weird, but I guess its because I always feel like the "only one" who loves to dress this way. None of my close friends have the same fashion style as me and I have yet to meet any people or bloggers in my area that have the same love of vintage fashion. That is why blogging is such a big part of my life! It connects me with all of you wonderful and lovely people who are just like me in many respects and therefore when it comes to fashion I know I will always have a place to belong because of Minnie Muse!

After looking over these photos again and loving all the pieces that were part of this ensemble it makes me excited for Summer break (6 more days)! For me, summer break is a time for adventures, antique shopping, picnics, trips to the beach and so much more. Therefore, I am rejuvenated with a desire to be ALL vintage and re-embrace the olden days once again! I also can't wait to have my entire closet to choose from (as I only have part of it up at college with me). Here's to hoping the next few months will bring more vintage ensembles to the blog!

Do you ever feel void of vintage/fashion inspiration?
What ensembles make you happy?

P.S. This months InStyle magazine has some great style inspiration as well as some great articles including one on Chris Evans for any of you Captain America fans!!
