//Confessions of a Fashion Blogger// How I Blog

Thursday, October 15, 2015

What a coincidence that in my last post for COFB II talked about how I manage life, school, and blogging and then last week rolled around and all of it went out the window as tests were scheduled, presentations due, and projects needing to be finished. Life sure is funny that way! Therefore, it just goes to show how ordinary my life is and how even in the midst of seeming like I have it all under control everything goes askew:) However, it is another week and I thankfully had time to go out and take some pictures for today's post. I thought I would share with you all today a little of my journey in starting this blog, how I have begun to get my name out there and how I reach readers. Nonetheless, you know I can never get onto the real topic until I have rambled for a short while, so for a quick rambling I have to tell you of a heavenly discovery!!!
As you all know, I am currently in college. Of course like all colleges, mine has a Library which I hardly ever frequent because I would much rather stay in my room to study than go to the library. However, last week I went to the library looking for a book for one of my classes, somehow I manages to stumble upon the isle with all the fashion books and boy was it all I could do to stop myself from doing a little happy dance in the isle. I started pulling books off the shelves and skimming through them as my mind and eyes soaked up all the fashionable goodness before me. As I made my way down the row I noticed shelves of red and black volumes lining the shelves from top to bottom.....of course I wondered what these plain bound volumes could be......oh was I in for a surprise as I began to read the words on the volumes, VOGUE, Harper's Bazaar, Good Housekeeping, McCalls, and many more. I immediately realized that these volumes were filled with all of the magazines past prints!!!! It was then that I tried not to squeal in excitement!!! Thus, I have all the VOGUE magazines (and others) dating back to the 30's (and even earlier) carefully printed and bound into great volumes. That isle in the Library is sheer perfection:) Okay, I warned you I was going to ramble but I just HAD to share this discovery with you:)
Shirt: Old Navy (last winter)
Sweater: Thrifted
Pants: Made (1940's pattern)
Belt: Sister's
Broach: Minnie's Menagerie
Ear Rings: Walmart ($1)
Books: Thrift Books (best online place ever)
Lipstick: Estee Lauder "Parallel Red" (mom's old lipstick)
Therefore, on with the topic of today's post: How I Blog!
Well, let us start from the beginning.....I started this blog to share what I love: Fashion and Vintage!
Honestly when starting a blog there are soooooo many things to think about such as: what I want to focus on, who my audience is, what my blog will look like, what colors I want it to be, how I will advertise it, and how I will get my name out there. For me it has been a learning process the entire time and I continue to learn more as I go along. Therefore, I will break my blog process down into a few categories: Blog Design, Posts and Pictures, Organization, and Getting Your Name out there.
#1- Blog Design: I am a very creative person and as a result my mind is constantly brainstorming new ideas (my brain always has a lot of tabs open) therefore when it comes to the over all look and feel of my blog I am pretty nit picky about it. I love when I visit a blog and I fall in love with it because of the colors, design, and template! Honestly, the overall look of a blog is the first thing a person notices, and to me it is one of the first "moments of truth" so to say in selling your blog to a potential reader (that sounds very business like). I have always been fascinated by graphic design and good quality layouts, so for me, my blog always has to look as professional as I can get it (without getting a custom design). I have loved learning the basics of coding and making custom headers.....it has actually made me think quite a few times about getting a second minor in graphic design (that would be such a fun degree....).
Therefore, if you are a new blogger reading this, or are thinking of starting a blog I encourage you to brainstorm all the different aspects to a blog so that you can create a cohesive whole that reflects your blog. I remember when I was first contemplating starting a blog, I actually emailed two of the first bloggers I had ever started following and asked them for tips as well as ran some of my blog names by them.....it never hurts to ask:)
#2- Posts and Pictures: What is a blog without good posts and what are good posts without good pictures!! Again, I will admit that I can be nit picky about this area of my blog too. Good quality pictures to me always reflect a person who takes the time to capture good pictures (having a nice camera is always a bonus). I will admit that it has taken me up until just a few months ago to really figure out how to take the best pictures I can....granted it is often a little more challenging to capture pictures that are the quality and focus I want since I take most of my own pictures using a try pod and sometimes I am still not satisfied (it takes practice). Therefore, if you have someone who has a nice camera and is good at taking pictures utilize their talents!!
Furthermore, on the topic of pictures, I also know bloggers who don't take pictures for their blog but utilize stunning and charming pictures from pinterest and the most unique gifs to illustrate the topic of their post. It is definitely a different approach but I quite envy their talent for finding the most perfect pictures and gifs that I can't help falling in love with:)
Before I leave this section I must say that well thought out posts are quite beneficial.....not that I always think my posts out......I usually just sit down and write words (which sometimes works). There are so many different types of posts be it post about life, thoughts, beauty, reviews, DIY, outfit posts, and fashion. The options are endless!!! However, always take into account your audience when you sit down to write a post and think about what they might want to hear:)
#3- Organization: Let me just be honest and say when it comes to blogging for me, I am not the most organized person:) LOL! Many bloggers keep a blog planner where they plan out all their posts for the month, few months, year, etc. and it is all just soooooo organized!!! I am NOT one of those bloggers. Granted, I am not a full time blogger just an off and on part time blogger on top of everything else. Thus, I might sometimes jot down a post idea in my planner and brainstorm different post I might want to share, but half the time I just decide what I want to write on after I take pictures. Granted, I don't just randomly go and take pictures though....the ensembles that I capture are usually about the only thing really thought out:)
#4- Getting Your Name Out There: I have found that the main question for new bloggers and even for bloggers who have been around for awhile is how to get your name out there! How do you get new readers and broaden your audience. There are definitely many ways to do this and each blogger has their own preferences, but today I will share with you my choices on the matter of networking. When I first started blogging the main way for getting my name and posts out there was to create a board on pinterest specifically for my blog and pin a few pictures from each post with a link onto the board. However, after being around for awhile I discovered Bloglovin which links all of your post directly to our account on Bloglovin and offers another way for people to follow your blog (if you don't have a Bloglovin account you should get one). Of course there are always your social networking sites to network with! My personal preference is to use Instagram and post a picture from my latest post onto my account, and a lot of bloggers use this approach:) Honestly, there are so many options for getting your name out there, some work for some people and some don't work as well. The last thing I will say is that it has always proved beneficial to comment on the post of my fellow bloggers and leave my blog link in the comment, that way if they read your comment they can check out your blog! Now, I am not meaning to comment only for this reason, but if you are going to comment on a post you like then go ahead and include your URL.

Every blogger is unique in their own way, and each blogs differently. However, this is how I blog:) My little ole blog has only been around for about a year and still has room for growth, as any blog might, but I hope that you maybe learned a little something about a fellow blogger (me) or even gained new ideas in which to apply to your blog.
I can't leave today's post however without talking a little bit about my outfit! I was simply dying to wear some plaid and thought this shirt would look great with my mustard sweater vest and high waisted khaki pant that I made last year. Granted, it is still in the low 80's and high 90's over in my neck of the woods but I decided to disregard the temperature for the pictures and really for most of the day:) You know me and my love for mustard :) so this ensemble will definitely be a go to this fall in a number of variations! I was originally going to wear the sweater and top without a belt but once I put it on I realized it needed a little something and the belt did the trick. I would put this ensemble in the late 1940's with a nod to your scholarly plaid trends which are currently in right now:)
Purse: Goodwill
Book: via Thrift Books
I know this post was a bit lengthy, but I wanted to get all the information I could in. Good luck to any new bloggers who might be reading this today and welcome to the team. Of course hello and thank you to all of you other bloggers who so faithfully follow me and my adventures as I follow yours. Until next time:)

What are some of your favorite fall trends?

What do you think of mustard and plaid together?

Is it cold yet where you are?

//Confessions of a Fashion Blogger// Managing Life, Blogging, & College

Thursday, October 1, 2015

Welcome back this week for the second installment of COFB II. I toyed so much with skipping a post this week due my somewhat overload of assignments I have on my schedule but then I thought..."What better time to talk about how I manage life, blogging, and college." For a little humor I will just say that there is not much of a "life" for me (voluntary and involuntary)....hehe. Okay, I have a life but when people think about "life" they usually attribute that to hanging out with friends and going out to have fun. However, I am an Introvert so my idea of a good time is staying far away from people I don't know..... which usually means stay in with a good book, blog post, Netflix marathon, or currently loads of homework rather than going out....yes I am one of those people:) Also, I don't know all to many people at college so staying in isn't that bad, especially considering my room mate and I have been close friends since my very first day at college....she is the best! Okay, but seriously it is totally a full time job (without pay) juggling life, blogging, and college. So how do I do it?
To be completely honest (this is a confessional after all) I am not quite sure how I manage to do everything!!!??? Not that I do all that much with my life, but the things I am a part of and do I am usually overly dedicated to and focus on ALL the time.
So lets talk life. To define life in my own words (in the since that I am using it here) mine consists of some good ole Netflix (currently addicted to Gilmore Girls thanks to my bestie Libby who got me hooked), YouTube web series (any Green Gables Fable Season 2 fans??), a small Bible study with some girls on campus, hall council (which is probably more in the College category so I will talk about that later), and then of course spending time with my family on the weekends when I go back home and catching up with all of my friends! Whew...that is actually a lot when I top to think about it! Now, Netflix is definitely one of those things that happens when homework is done or fitting in an episode in before bed, so that is usually the last on the list, but sometimes I just need a little down time for myself.
Like I said before, I am not one to go out and do stuff like every other college student....thankfully my awesome room mate and college bestie Jessica is exactly the same way so we enjoy each others company at meals as well as when we hide away in our room, immersed in our own world, away from people:)
Blogging.....can't avoid this topic because I am a dedicated (most of the time) blogger and blogging is a part of who I am.....I feel so lost without it! However, how do I manage writing and running a blog, plus keeping up with fellow bloggers on top of life and the loads (some weeks) of homework that come with being a full time college student? Hmmm......I really think blogging has become such a part of who I am that it is now an integral part of my weekly schedule. This semester I have gotten in the swing of taking pictures in the afternoon on Wednesday, writing my post on Wednesday night and then scheduling it to post in the morning on Thursday. However, it does take time to take the pictures, edit them write a post, etc. Yes, I could be using that hour and a half to do homework, but I choose to squeeze in blogging (even if it means loosing a couple hours of my day) because it is my happy time:) It is the one time during the week that I really get to sit down and write for one thing, and trust me I have some major writing with drawls (as I am smack dab in the middle of a big writing project that has been postponed due to school) and this fills the void somewhat:) Plus, my weekly posts are so special because it means that I get to share my heart, life, and loves with all of you lovely readers who make blogging so absolutely worth it! Somehow I manage to balance being a blogger and still keep up with my homework.....which now brings us to the topic of College.
Ah......College.....a joy and a dread at times:) Honestly right now, college IS my life!! Every waking moment is focused on going to class, doing homework, completing projects, and also being Vice President of hall council for our dorm. As a full time college student most every waking moment is filled with what needs to happen next and what tasks need to be done. So how do I manage it? Well, for one thing I have been using my planner a LOT more this semester.....the pages of my days are filled with color coded notes, events, To do's, due dates, assignments, and the like. I also seem to be addicted to sticky notes....hey, that is what they are for....notes to yourself right!! They help to keep me organized too.
However, in all honesty the only way I am truly able to manage all the demands of college on top of everything else is because God is my constant support and guide and helps me get through every day! I don't know what I would do without him in the craziness of life! Sometimes it seems like I am barely treading water with my head hardly above the surface, but I know the only way I haven't sunk yet is because God has given me the strength to persevere!! Some days are bleak and filled with so much to be done, piling up until there is no light at the end of the tunnel, but I know that if I simply focus to get the job done I will soon see the light at the end. I just keep on working until it is the weekend and I get to take a breath, although usually only for a short while as my weekends often consist on extra homework too....but that is my life....only two more years and then I am DONE!!!! Counting the days.....
When I was thinking about this post today I wanted to capture the joy of life just a bit.....therefore I thought a few fun "smiley"pictures would brighten my day as well as encourage you to keep going even when the going gets hard and the end looks far away. A positive outlook on life amid the heavy load helps to fill you with joy that helps you keep on pushing along:)

I hope you found today's post applicable to your life and maybe even encouraging. Managing everything that goes on is a 24/7 juggling act but with God on your side He sure helps to lighten the load. Sometimes you just have to take a little time for yourself, but always make sure you are well organized so that you can still get the important tasks done!
Remember to always stay positive, keep smiling, and fill the world with Joy:)
All the best until next time!

Do you find it hard to manage life and everything else?

How do you fit everything in and stay organized?

Can you relate to any of my struggles?

//Confessions of a Fashion Blogger// Collection of Reactions

Thursday, September 24, 2015

Happy 2nd day of FALL dear readers! I hope the crisp autumn weather has found you in your little corner of the world. As much as I regret saying it, my fist day of fall was not quite as crisp as I had hoped for but that didn't stop me from smiling every time a glistening golden rays of sunshine hit my face and melted me all the way to my toes! The sun was shinning high in the sky as if to say hello and as faint as the smell was...if you concentrated you might just be able to make out the waft of autumn in the breeze:) I am afraid you all might find me a little to obsessed and in love with fall but it is by far my all time favorite season in the history of EVER!

However, enough with my exuberation of the coming season and on to today's exciting post and the premiere of Confessions of a Fashion Blogger II. When I first announced bringing back this series I asked you all for questions you would like answered or things you have wondered about. Therefore, in today's post and the first post of the series I will be answering a question submitted by the lovely Naomi Bennet of Wonderland Creek, talking about the reactions and comments I have received from people over the past couple of years in regards to how I dress (some of them are quite interesting an entertaining).

#1 - For those of you who watched my first Q&A I told you all a very interesting/funny story (min. 8:34). In short, one day a guy walked past me at college when I for class and asked if I make my own clothes. He then went on to say that he always noticed me when he was leaving class and really liked how I dressed (in all honesty it was a little strange....hehe). However, the crazy part of the story comes a semester or maybe even a year later when I was at the college involvement fair and there was a guy sitting at a table and he said "I know you!" of course I was like "Who are you crazy person?" (I said all of this in my head of course...).....out loud I really said "Oh really?" and he was like "Yes....you are the girl who always wears vintage!" Needless to say that guy somehow remembered who I was over a year later simply by how I dress! Weird or cool??? Not quite sure:)

#2 - " You look like a teacher....are you?" I don't actually remember where or from who I heard this from but it is pretty accurate for me because I will be a teacher one day:)

#3 - While eating lunch at our local tea room with my mom a lady told me "You look like you are going to school on the east coast!" Strangely enough, even though I was wearing a skirt that day I somehow managed to put together an ensemble that was quite preppy in itself and thus I would have to agree that I looked like someone who would be going to school on the east coats...hehe.

#4 - This one is REALLY interesting and I toyed with not including it but I thought it was just way to out there not to share so here goes....someone actually used a bad word (because the average worldly college student can't seem to have a normal conversation without using them) in exclamation to how much they loved my outfit.....strange I know.

#5 - While waiting in the Subway line my first week of school a girl came up to me and said "You just look so fabulous and I wanted to make sure that you knew that"....of course I am not the best at responding to compliments so I just said "Oh....thank you (with a smile)."

# 6- My RA at college this semester told me " last semester whenever my friends and I went to grab dinner at the dinning hall we would always notice what you were wearing." I am pretty sure a lot of people in the dinning hall notice the girl who walks around looking like she stepped out of the 40's / 50's but that is what makes like exciting:)!

#7 - By far my favorite comment I have received was from an RA visiting from a different dorm that was coming around to all of the rooms in our residence hall and asking us a question for something. Anyways, when I opened the door her first response was....."Oh my gosh....you look like a presidents wife!" I couldn't help but smile and laugh at that one:) I was actually wearing the capri outfit from my Trudy Cooper post.

#8 - This one is actually a compliment that I received just today and knew I had to include it. I was walking back to my dorm after meeting with one of my professors and I passed this guy on the sidewalk who turned to me and says "You look beautiful.....I really like what you are wearing." Now, some people might beg to say that his intentions were not the best but you can tell by how someone says something, what they mean, and he was quite sincere. Plus, in my opinion, when a girl is dressed modestly and classically in a skirt (like I was) a guys complement on your dress has more to do with him appreciating how you care about your appearance, and the dignity with which you carry yourself, rather than trying to get your attention in a bad way. Quite honesty, I have had a couple of guys compliment me on what I was wearing when I walked by them and it always renews my hope in society that guys appreciate a girl who takes the time to look nice but who also cares about dressing modestly. In such a modern world, most guys response to girls is that they are cute or hot, but when a guy says you look beautiful (or maybe even nice) it has to do more with a since of dignity rather than attracting the wrong attention.

In conclusion of today's post I would have to say that for someone who dresses vintage, receiving compliments from people is quite encouraging as well as many times amusing. While I often joke about people looking at me and thinking I am an interesting, different, and sometimes quite a weird person, most often people look at someone who has defined their own style and respects them for it. For those of us who dress vintage, or even for those of you who choose to look nice and put time into what you wear, it is not so much that you dress differently, but that you don't care what others say or think about you. Quite honestly, I think it is refreshing (especially for older people) when they see someone dress like we do because it reminds them of what life used to be like when women took the extra time every day to appear put together, instead of throwing on a tshirt, sport shorts, and head out for the day. The way that a person dresses says so very much about them as a person, and dressing modestly or in vintage truly sets you apart as someone who cares about their appearance and who also has a high since of dignity about them.

Therefore, I hope this post encourages you to laugh at the funny and interesting comments or remarks that you get from people, as well as to also cherish the sincere comments that come your way. You wear the clothes that you do for a reason and NEVER let anyone try and persuade you otherwise. Embrace your style and wear it with confidence and dignity!

Which of the reactions I shared is your favorite and why?

Have you ever received and interesting reaction?

What do you think about my idea of looking beautiful and carrying yourself with dignity?

Series II Comming Soon

Thursday, August 20, 2015

Welcome back lovely readers to another Thursday post. I am happy to announce the return of the Confessions of a Fashion Blogger series!!!! Hurray!!!

When this series first hit the blog (you can check out the wrap up Here) I was not sure how much of a hit it would make, but the posts in the series have come to be some of my most popular posts, so I am happy to bring Series II back this fall. On that note, I thought I would do a little something different :) While I have compiled my own list of topics I would like to include in the new series, I thought that it would be fun to get feedback from you all who read Minnie Muse on what you would like to see included in the series!!! Therefore, if you are interested in throwing out ideas or even contributing to the series (I might include real life scenarios or personal stories??) than start thinking.

The questions can be things you have always wondered about other fashion bloggers, things you struggle with or wonder personally and want to know if others out there struggle with the same things, etc. Also, if you submit a question that has your own personal experience, view, or a story associate with it, I would love to hear what you have to say and hope that you would allow me to share your own experience as an example.
I really loved this series because it allowed me to talk about my life as a fashion blogger, sharing my heart, and being transparent to all of you readers. However, it also allowed you all to share your own struggles or views in specific areas and I thoroughly enjoyed reading everyone's comments.

If I receive enough questions for Series II I might even consider filming a Confessions of a Fashion Blogger Q&A for the series (yippie).....sooooo we shall see!!!

Therefore, start thinking and typing away!! You can leave your questions, experiences, and stories down in the comments section or you can email them directly to me at: sweetsidecupcakes@hotmail.com

I can't wait to hear what you all have to ask and share for Series II.

//Confessions of a Fashion Blogger// The Finally of The Series

Thursday, April 30, 2015

Well dear readers, I am back again this week to wrap up my April blog series Confessions of a Fashion Blogger [frowny face :( ]. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed brainstorming, writing, and sharing all of these topics with you these past three weeks!!! And lest I forget all of the great comments for each post.I loved hearing feedback from everyone about their struggles, how they related to the post, and how they overcome some of the struggles we all face.

Like I had mentioned in the posts, this week I will focus on the key points from each post, what I loved most about it, as well as share a few of my favorite comments........so without further ado let's get started!

  • The truth is that there is no differentiation between fashion bloggers and everyone else, we are still just ordinary people. Just because we might always look nice wherever we go; have our hair fixed, makeup done, and wear a smashing ensemble, does not mean that we are "Perfect." We still wake up most days and feel completely unmotivated.
  • Whenever I am feeling unmotivated, all I have to do is read all of the fabulous and sweet comments from you lovelies each week and I immediately feel motivated to breath, take a break, and come back with a fresh mindset.

"In the end, being a fashion blogger is not always about appearing put together. It is about being transparent for your readers, letting them in, and sharing who you are, your struggles, and what inspires you."

From Emileigh-
I relate. Most of the time when I take outfit photos it has to be because I really like my outfit. There are still days when I have "meh" outfits or Monday outfits (you know, the kind that take fifteen minutes to throw together), and most of those don't make it onto the blog. Or there are days when I am thwarted by weather or lighting!
I've found that starting a post whenever I think of an idea and getting it typed asap, even if it isn't done, helps me a lot later when I'm in a time crunch or drawing a blank. Then I have a bunch of starts that I can just finish out. I also keep a GIANT library of my photos to draw from when I can't get out to take a picture for something.

From Jill-
I definitely struggle with motivation on my blog....I feel like it's all the time!! I usually keep myself motivated by trying to do some sort of monthly series on one of my post days then at least I will always have a general idea of what to write about once a week for an entire month. Many times, while I'm writing those posts an idea will spring into my head for some other sort of post that would fit in to one of the other days of the week!

From Charlotte-
Somedays, my sisters and I just have to take a break when we've scheduled a photo shoot, especially if we just plum don't have the energy to do it. One thing that we have learned from singing is that if you try and force something (like a practice, or a photo shoot), it typically comes out... forced (i.e- not of the greatest quality). Sometimes taking a step back and letting your mind think on other things than blogging has really helped me in the past (and not just with blogging... I do that on most things that I'm stressed about :)

Anyhow, how do I keep motivated? Through lots of rest & sweet comments on the blog, and knowing that our girls' blog is making an impact out there on the web :)

  • I don't always dress up....Some days I want to wear pajamas around the house and comfy regular clothes out and about :o
  • Why do I dress this way or put in the effort to diligently picking what I wear (which is totally out of the ordinary)?......I dress this way because it is ME!
  • So the truth of the matter is this....while some days I might not feel up to picking out an ensemble I choose to take the extra time to look nice because that is what makes me feel confident. Not that I struggle with confidence because I know my confidence and worth is found in Christ, but rather confidence to seize the day as ME and not some other girl!
  • I want to be the best version of myself every day when I step out the door, so taking the time and effort to put something decent together is totally worth the time!

From Ladyfair-
I wear pajamas a lot lol but that's because I don't work much currently, I'm always at home. I have very few occasions to dress up for. I never wear pajamas outside of the house though, that just irks me. I've seen teens going to school in their pajamas a lot lately. They look like slobs. High school is supposed to be a primer for the workforce or a post-secondary education. I honestly don't understand why these kids are allowed to get away with looking like this (yet they do get yelled at for bra straps showing, so what gives?!). I like to dress up when I'm going out sometimes but it depends on what I'm doing. If I'm running errands I don't even bother with makeup, I just go out in leggings and a tunic sweater. If I'm meeting someone, like the other day when my friend came in from Toronto, I get all decked out. I also do that for dates with my fiance. It's nice to dress up once and awhile and feel special. If I could do it every day that would be cool but it's too high maintenance for me lol. I have a lot of hand wash items and it just gets tedious to do the cleaning if I wear too many of them in one week.

From Samantha-
This post speaks to me on so many levels. Seriously.
Some days I just do not feel like getting dressed up, and other days I ask myself "Why do I even do this?". But much like yourself, I do it for me! I do it so that I'm not just another face on the street. But there isn't anything wrong with yoga pants, a messy bun, and a tshirt on occasion. ;)

From Katie-
I feel like you live inside my brain! I can't tell you how many times I've gotten up on a Saturday morning and put on nicer clothes to go run errands, and my husband, whose daily "uniform" is a hoodie/t-shirt and cargo shorts, looks at me and says "what are you so dressed up for?" I guess I've just always felt the need to present myself as best as I can, and I want my clothes to match my personality - I'm not a lazy slob, so I don't want to dress like one. Although I have to admit, as soon as I get home from work, I have the habit of throwing on a t-shirt and yoga pants to cook dinner and relax for the rest of the night.

People are just so casual about EVERYTHING now and especially in the way they dress. Don't you think? Most people usually look like they've just rolled out of bed, or just got done working out at the gym - ugh! Back in the day people put such thought & effort into the way they dress. It was (& still is to me) a sign of respect to look put together. My mom told me she remembers her mom wearing housedresses working around home & then would always change into something nicer to run to downtown for anything! There were no people parading around the grocery store in pajamas then! (They probably would've thought you'd escaped from a sanatorium if you did.) I totally get what you're saying about comfy clothes too. Sometimes you just want to wear something comfortable! I would heartily recommend housedresses. They are soooo comfy & still pretty for chores around the house.

  • When it comes to fashion, that is really just a general term used to describe the type of clothes we wear, for everyone wears fashions. However, when we dive deeper into the topic of fashion we find that there is    another word needed when talking about how we dress and who we are…..that word is style
  • When we think about it more, each of us has our own unique style. Through style, we are given the freedom to create and be who we are!
  • There are so many days that I look in my closet and want to grab at my hipster stash or throw on a little something boho, but then I pull back and stick with vintage because that is what I feel confident in!

From Jill-
I think my styles vary between vintage and casual/preppy. I think i generally fall back on the preppy style because my skirts and dresses have a more vintage feel and I usually just get up and put on a pair of jeans first thing.

From Brigid-
I definitely am more than one style personality. As much as I love authentic vintage, on a day to day basis most of the time I wear pretty modern stuff, though my absolute favorite outfits involve 1/2 circle skirts and t-shirts. So, you could say I am a mix of modern and vintage. :)

  •  The statement "I have nothing to wear" is literally not true, but figuratively it applies to our life every time we look at our closet blankly and seem to see empty hangers.
  • Yes I am a fashion blogger, yes I love fashion, yes I have tons of clothes, but sometimes I feel like I plum just don't have anything to wear.
  • The fact is that we always have something to wear, weather we see it or not. When we feel creatively blocked we just need to take a step back, breath, reassess the situation, and go with something simple.

Over thinking an ensemble just makes us feel even more blocked so on days when you are feeling creatively uninspired choose something simple and make it easy on those days.

I'm not to the point where I can look in my closet and pull something out, I'm not sure anyone is! Some people have insisted it's because of your colors (color me beautiful, specifically) I'm finding this to be true. But I also think it has a good deal to do with my having too many stand alone pieces. They only go with one thing, that doesn't work well.
I'm working to weed out those items I just don't like anymore, don't fit (I lost 30lbs over the course of last year), I just don't like anymore, etc. I find that putting my goodwill bag in my room and leaving it full for about two weeks works well, that way if I regret putting something in, I'll pull it out. But if it sits there for two weeks-byebye!

My stars, what an incredible wardrobe and closet you have. My own closet is, I kid you not, slightly bigger than a matchbox, and while I do store some items, like hats and gloves elsewhere, it means I have to be ruthless with what I keep and what I bring in. Like everyone, I do have those "nothing to wear" days though, but find that one way to help counterbalance them is to set aside a day every now and then and play dress up in my own closet. Planning out new outfits for the future that I'll have ready to go (photos help there big time) at a moment's notice. This way old favourites can meet new acquisitions, less frequently sported pieces can see the light of day, and anything that's ready to get the boot can do just that.

From Paige-
This post is so fun! Not only do you have a beautifully decorated closet/room, but I related with this so much! I too have had the closet dilemma. And yes, I probably have too many clothes. On days like that I usually go with a simple go-to look like my chambray dress or something. :)

//Confessions of a Fashion Blogger// I Have Nothing To Wear....a Peek Inside My Closet

Thursday, April 23, 2015

Hello all of you lovely readers, I hope your week has been splendid so far! Well, this week is the next to the last week of my April blog series Confessions of a Fashion Blogger and I have so loved writing these posts each week and I hope you wonderful people have enjoyed them!
This week I decided to talk about the struggle I face when I "just don't have anything to wear!"
I know everyone of you has struggled with this dilemma...we might be packing for a trip and totally not have enough room for what we want to pack, but then when we try to get dressed in the morning our closet becomes completely empty and we think that we have nothing to wear!

I thought that today instead of sharing an outfit I would take you on a little tour of my closet...well, really my room :) You see, up until about four years ago my sister and I shared a room and a closet (I seriously don't know how that worked). However, four years ago I got a room in the garage. Yes, the garage. We added two walls in our garage and made a doorway through the laundry room (it is kind of a secret entrance). Anyways, my room isn't the biggest, it is fairly long but narrow so pretty much every inch of space is used and because of that my room is basically my closet but that is pretty great!

Before I go into the whole dilemma about not having anything to wear (which is clearly not true) lets take a quick tour of my closet:)

So in my room I have one double rack instillation and two racks that I have bought (as I have needed more space over the years). The above picture is a snapshot of some the dresses on my dress rack (which just might be sagging from the weight). My dresses are mostly organized by season/color and as you can see are a wide variety of homemade, vintage, and thrifted.

These are all of my skirts. All a mixture of winter, fall, spring, and summer.

Here are my sweaters. They are usually organized by color, but I have gotten a bit lazy when hanging them back up.

Oh, and this is my blogger hat wall:) Yes, most bloggers have that stereotypical wall on which they hang hats, purses, or clothing...that is just who we are.

This is an inspiration board I have had for awhile...really it just makes me happy :)

Oh, and what is my closet with out my fabulous retro styled Captain America poster. Yes, I am a geek!

Okay, but enough with giving you a peek into my closet, lets talk about the struggles of not having anything to wear shall we! First off, that statement "I have nothing to wear" is literally not true, but figuratively it applies to our life every time we look at our closet blankly and seem to see empty hangers. Now, my mom would protest that I have to much clothes and need to get rid of some (which is partially true) but I love fashion and I love vintage so my closet is like my collection. I am sure that is the same for you? However, that is not to say that out of all the wazoo of clothes I posses there are still so many times that I look at my closet and cannot feasibly find anything to wear (or anything that looks good or appeals to me) and of course many times when this happens I think "Oh my gosh, I need to go shopping."

However, that is the truth of the matter. Yes I am a fashion blogger, yes I love fashion, yes I have tons of clothes, but sometimes I feel like I plum just don't have anything to wear. Maybe I can picture you right now nodding your head in agreement saying "That is so right," or maybe you have never found yourself in this dilemma (if not, trust me a day will come).

Sitting here writing this post is really making me think about how I handle these day and honestly I don't even know what I do! I think that most days my room ends up appearing to have had a tornado sweep through as I decided to try on half my wardrobe? There is a huge possibility that I go through multiple ensembles before settling on something I feel is slightly decent. However, while at college I have about 1/4th of my closet with me so I would say getting dressed each day is strangely both easier and more challenging. I have seriously had to learn and live off of 5 skirts, 3 dresses, 3 pants, multiple tops both solid and printed, and sweaters/cardigans (but that has been good).
The fact is that we always have something to wear, weather we see it or not. When we feel creatively blocked we just need to take a step back, breath, reassess the situation, and go with something simple.
Over thinking an ensemble just makes us feel blocked so make it easy on those days.

Well, that is about all I have to say on the issue today, however I would love to hear your thoughts on the subject! Remember to check in next week for the final post of the series where I will give a recap on the series as well as share some of my favorite comments along the way :)
